Tottington Nursery School was established in 1990 by Sue and John Robinson, using their expertise in health and education. John had been a school teacher for many years and prior to leaving to support Sue in the nursery, he was a head teacher at a secondary school in Salford. Sue was a hospital sister, a district nurse in Tottington for many years and latterly a health visitor before leaving nursing to set up the nursery.
The nurseries have been very much a family affair, as John and Sue’s eldest son Paul joined them in the nursery in 2001 followed by their youngest son Andrew in 2005. Paul and Andrew are both childcare qualified and have young children of their own.
John and Sue’s daughter Joanne joined the family business in 2009 after having her second child, having left her role as a banking partner at a law firm in Manchester. Joanne has two young children and is also childcare qualified.
Joanne joining the business coincided with Sue and John’s decision to take a step back from daily involvement in the nurseries, so the nurseries are now owned and run by Paul, Andrew and Joanne. John remains in his role as a director and Sue maintains her involvement as a consultant to help ensure that the highest standards of childcare are met. Paul, Andrew and Joanne are involved in each of the nurseries every day, they do not manage from a distance.
“Self-evaluation is relentless because the owners work continuously to enhance the nursery's support for children's learning and welfare. Strength of the evaluation process is the frequent cross-discussion between the staff and managers across the four nurseries in the group, in order to share strong practice and develop ideas.”
